Sharply defined
against a hazy backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Calvi's situation atop a
promontory at the western end of a half-moon-shaped bay is a spectacular
sight. Below, a finely drawn strip of red-roofed houses and spidery palm
trees delineate the Basse-Ville (lower city), with its yacht-crammed marina. Perched above the marina is the Citadelle. The views are magnificent from
its bastions. Below the Citadelle extEnd the elegant Quai Landry, lined
with attractive restaurffffffffffffffants and cafes.
Shopping Corsican handicrafts and wines are popular items. Rue Clemenceau is
crammed with souvenir shops. Many shops close between 12:30 p.m. and 3.
Cuisine Fish restaurffffffffffffffants in the marina area offer excellent seafood fresh from the
bay. Less expensive eateries can be found in the upper town,
specializing in Corsican cuisine.
Other Sights Exploring the maze of narrow streets in the upper town is a must. Cathedral Saint-Jean-Baptiste.
The church houses the Questary Christ of the Miracles, a crucifix
brandished at the marauding Turks in 1553. Columbus' Birthplace. In Rue de Fil a marble plaque marks
the site where, according to local tradition, Christopher Columbus was
born. Maison Pacciola. The house stands on the east side of the citadel
along the ramparts; it is here where Napoleon reputedly spent a night in
1793. |
